Nick, Work-learning student at Kersten

Nick is following a BBL course (working and learning) at Kersten in the Netherlands. Here, he mainly learns in practice.

We invest in new talent at Kersten, for instance by offering work-study programmes. This allows apprentices to gain practical experience straight away, and because we have various techniques in house at Kersten, an apprentice can be directly introduced to various technical disciplines to discover where his or her interests lie.

Nick, what does BBL mean to you?

‘That I can get my qualifications in welding and construction. You learn more in practice. It's not just at school in the books, it's mainly seeing and doing. You also earn money, which is also nice’.

So a lot of practice and only a little bit of theory. How do you like that?

‘I really like it because I can't sit still for long and I don't have the focus to sit behind a book all the time. So if you mainly want to stay busy, BBL is a very nice course.’

What do you enjoy doing most?

‘I've been to different places. I've been at the cutting torch. I've been at the sawing machine. In the further hall, I have cut with other techniques, so you can actually go anywhere. As long as you find it interesting and fun to do. But if you indicate it of I want to try something different they will give you that opportunity too’.
